Phyllis has been a colleague of mine for over 18 years. She is one of the reasons I came to USciences. As the Director of the Teaching and Learning Center at USciences, Phyllis has been a mentor to most of the new faculty hires at USciences during my tenure. She has guided dozens of faculty straight out of graduate school or postdoctoral programs to successful promotion and tenure. She is particularly adept a working with faculty who have been practicing clinicians (Pharmacists, Physical and Occupational Therapist); guiding them in the cultural of academia and mentoring them to become excellent teachers.

I know Phyllis Blumberg as a colleague in the POD Network of faculty developers. In all my many interactions with Phyllis I have found her to be sharply focused, innovative, keenly critical and passionate about practical ways to apply solid research to the improvement of teaching and learning in higher education. On top of all that, Phyllis is personable and a pleasure to work with.

During my 5 year tenure as Dean of the Misher College of Arts and Sciences at University of the Sciences (2002-2007), I had the great fortune to work closely with Phyllis Blumberg. I found in her a generous colleague, who readily shared her profound and insightful knowledge among the faculty and staff.

Dr. Blumberg established an impactful Teaching and Learning Center, which greatly improved the quality of instruction and development of junior faculty as great teachers. Dr. Blumberg also brought knowledge and leadership to assessment of learning outcomes. By cultivating the faculty’s capacity for assessment, she enabled instructors to critically evaluate their strengths and deficiencies and to improve learning in their classes. She has been a gift to USciences. For these abilities, she was elevated to Assistant Provost for Faculty Development and well received by colleagues.

She has published and presented widely on learning in higher education.

I can recommend her wholeheartedly.
