Course Design/ Redesign Institute with Dr. Phyllis Blumberg, author of Making Learning-Centered Teaching Work


Institute uses a combination of self-paced voice-over presentations explaining the content, discussions, activities, assignments and consultations with the presenter to thoroughly design or redesign  a course.


You new course will feature:

alignment of student learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities and student assessments

extensively use of active learning

assessments that are integrated with learning

scaffolding  support for difficult content and high stakes exams

use of content to facilitate learning



During this institute, participants will use a practical how to guide to design a course to improve student learning in face to face, hybrid or online courses. Participants will discuss the application of learning-centered teaching to their disciplines and their classes. They will learn how to spend their time facilitating learning and teaching students how to take responsibility for their learning. More than half of the time will be devoted to actually working on the design or redesign of their course, getting feedback and improving the course. The newly designed course will feature better designed learning outcomes and will engage students.

Faculty will bring a laptop computer, course materials for 1 course they would like to revise or course description, materials for new course. Faculty will share their current and planned materials in the spirit of constructive feedback and improvement.
